The state of Israel was just served notice by Black Lives Matter in a big way. The human rights movement pummeled Israel for its decades long oppression of the Palestinian people in its new platform. In a show of solidarity between black Americans, who have bravely struggled against centuries of discrimination in the U.S., BLM has reached out to their Palestinian brothers and sisters by embracing the Palestinian call for justice and freedom.
BLM chided Israel for their systemic and institutionalized racism against the Palestinians, pointing out the confiscation of their lands, the bulldozing of their homes, and the continuous ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinian population in favor of Jewish immigrants.
BLM endorsed the Palestinian call for the boycott, divestment, and sanctioning of Israel until it conforms to international law. The movement, known as BDS, calls on Israel to do the following:
- Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall,
- Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
- Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194.
Here is part of BLM’s platform on Palestine:
“Israel is an apartheid state with over 50 laws on the books that sanction discrimination against the Palestinian people. Palestinian homes and land are routinely bulldozed to make way for illegal Israeli settlements. Israeli soldiers also regularly arrest and detain Palestinians as young as 4 years old without due process. Everyday, Palestinians are forced to walk through military checkpoints along the US-funded apartheid wall.”
BLM and other rights groups have pointed out the striking similarities between the treatment of Palestinians and Black South Africans when the minority white population brutalized the majority black population for decades. The regime finally collapsed after decades of political, social, and economic boycotts from the majority of the world. The United States was one of the last countries to boycott the racist regime. Palestinians and their supporters today are emulating the movement, and their support is increasing, which has alarmed Israel.
Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu has made it a priority to attack the movement, calling it anti-Semitic, in a typical Israeli approach to shut down criticism of Israeli atrocities.
However, just like South Africa and Jim Crow in America collapsed, so too will the racism and systemic bigotry of Israel, so that one day everyone on the land can live in a society which values freedom, dignity, and justice.
