Donald Trump has become such a hated, vile figure in the celebrity world, it’s no wonder that his fellow Hollywood stars are rushing at every opportunity to make a statement against him. We saw the massive opposition to Trump’s presidency when no well-known, respectable artists would perform for his inauguration. Now that he’s officially become the 45th President of the United States, we’re seeing celebrities actively using their art AGAINST him.
Actor Shia LaBeouf is leading that anti-Trump charge. On January 20th, the day that Trump was inaugurated, LaBeouf began a livestream that will last through Trump’s first (and only, if he makes it that long) term. The four-year livestream is called “HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US” and consists of a camera set up right outside the New York Museum of the Moving Image. Anyone is encouraged to walk up to the camera and say the words “he will not divide us” into the lens while it runs on a continuous livestream.
It’s a great project, but any great social project will eventually be threatened by idiots. Just days after the project began, a white supremacist stopped by to hijack the livestream with his hateful rhetoric. As LaBeouf stood nearby, the white racist could be seen walking up to the camera and saying the word “14” into the webcam – a clear nod to white supremacists.
LaBeouf knew exactly what “14” stood for – the “fourteen words” in the slogan “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” – which was created by white supremacist David Lane. LaBeouf wasn’t having it, and he stood almost right on top of the man and shouted over his racist rhetoric “He will not divide us.” The racist tried to get away, but LaBeouf followed him in between shouting into the camera. Eventually, the shouting match escalated and LaBeouf scared the white supremacist off.
