It’s no secret that Donald Trump and his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, don’t give a damn about the lives of people of color. In fact, Session is a well-known racist. Now, however, they are using their power to put their dreams of abusing those people into practice via the law. Instead of doing as the Department of Justice is supposed to and protecting the civil rights of minorities from would-be killer cops, Sessions sent around a memo ordering the review of consent decrees put in place under the Obama Justice Department that were designed to fix problems of violations of civil rights and discrimination in police departments around the nation. Sessions says of the decrees:
“Law enforcement officers perform uniquely dangerous tasks. The Department should help promote officer safety, officer morale, and public respect for their work.”
“Local control. and local accountability are necessary for effective local policing. It is not the responsibility of the federal government to manage non-federal law enforcement agencies.”
No, that is exactly the purpose of the Department of Justice, Mr. Sessions. You’re supposed to protect the civil rights of all Americans – especially historically disenfranchised groups of people. but, we all know who you are and what you’re about. It’s a wet dream for you to have cops killing people of color in the streets while you and your justice department gleefully look the other way.
These decrees were signed and agreed to in the first place because countless people of color have been seen being brutally abused and murdered by police on film, and the departments that those killer cops hail from have been found to have serious problems with systematic abuses of power, denial of basic Constitutional rights, and systematic discrimination.
Civil rights and policing experts are up in arms about Sessions’ approach here, as they should be. Executive Director of Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs Jonathan Smith says of what he is learning here:
“This is terrifying. This raises the question of whether, under the current attorney general, the Department of Justice is going to walk away from its obligation to ensure that law enforcement across the country is following the Constitution.”
Indeed it does. Then again, with all of the “law and order” talk from Team Trump on the campaign trail, combined with the open and overt racism, one can hardly be surprised at any of this.
Welcome to Donald Trump’a America.
