Donald Trump has been one of the most secretive presidents this country has ever seen. What we saw through his presidential campaign was a massive amount of shadiness over his tax returns, and that hasn’t improved at all since Trump took office.
In fact, one of the first things Trump did when he got into the White House was to immediately undo some regulations that were put in place by former President Barack Obama’s administration – particularly the ones that kept the American people informed on what their president and government was doing.
Thanks to his secrecy, Trump has found himself in yet another lawsuit – he is being sued by three organizations who believe that Trump’s secrecy is a direct violation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Those organizations are the National Security Archive, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University. CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said:
“Given the many issues we have already seen in this White House with conflicts of interest, outside influence, and potential ethics violations, transparency is more important than ever, so we had no choice but to sue.”
This is not good news for Trump, who has been hiding records of every White House visit that has taken place with high level officials. The Trump administration has refused to share those government documents, despite the fact that the FOIA requires them to do so.
To make matters even worse, these three organizations are also requesting that the records at Mar-A-Lago be released as well, considering Trump has hosted many high level meetings at his Florida golf resort. Tom Blanton, director of the National Security Archive, said:
“President Obama routinely released the data we’re seeking with no damage to presidential privilege, and this information is central to the Secret Service mission and thus clearly agency records subject to FOIA.”
Considering Trump’s disastrous history, there’s always been something illegal or unethical going on behind the scenes whenever Trump has refused to be transparent. If he’s sued and forced to disclose what he’s really doing in these meetings, he could be in real trouble.
