It has become more than apparent that Donald Trump has no regard for the safety and security of the United States, our secrets, our allies, or our missions abroad.
In a major breach of information, Trump has given Russia classified information. According to The Washington Post:
“President Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister [Sergei Lavrov] and Ambassador [Sergey Kislyak] in a White House meeting last week, according to current and former U.S. officials, who said that Trump’s disclosures jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State.
The information Trump relayed had been provided by a U.S. partner through an intelligence-sharing arrangement considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government, officials said.”
“The partner had not given the United States permission to share the material with Russia, and officials said that Trump’s decision to do so risks cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State. After Trump’s meeting, senior White House officials took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and National Security Agency.”
All of this is happening at the same time investigations are ongoing into the Trump campaign’s connection to Russia, as well as several other allegations showing potential collusion with Russia to influence the election.
Trump clearly doesn’t have any qualms surrounding giving a foreign adversary classified information.
According to one U.S. official:
“This is code-word information… [Trump] revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”
This doesn’t only pose national security issues, but international security woes. According to WaPo, this is what occurred in Trump’s meeting with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov:
“Trump went on to discuss aspects of the threat that the United States only learned through the espionage capabilities of a key partner. He did not reveal the specific intelligence gathering method, but described how the Islamic State was pursuing elements of a specific plot and how much harm such an attack could cause under varying circumstances. Most alarmingly, officials said, Trump revealed the city in the Islamic State’s territory where the U.S. intelligence partner detected the threat.”
Unlike Trump, The Washington Post did not reveal the information disclose because they are clearly more aware of the consequences of revealing such information. In addition, Trump may have harmed an intelligence gathering partnership with the sources that revealed the information to the United States. If they can’t trust us with information, they may likely choose not to disclose in the future.
If Trump was trying to make us think he has no connection to Russia that may be harmful to the United States, this isn’t exactly the way to prove it. In fact, it just goes to show that with his utter disregard for classified material, he has no place being in the Oval Office. Congress needs to impeach him immediately, and has more that one reason, with evidence, to do so.
