The FBI and Congressional probe into Donald Trump and his associates’ potential collusion with the Russian government to fix the 2016 presidential election is now moving at the speed of a freight train. The whole thing kicked into high gear after Trump fired now-former FBI Director James Comey, and then repeatedly undercut the talking points of his own officials by admitting that Russia was on his mind when he made the final decision to drop the axe on Comey.
Following that debacle, pressure grew for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel to oversee the investigation, which he finally did in the form of former FBI Director Robert Mueller. All the while, Trump and his people have maintained innocence, and Trump himself has called the probe a “witch hunt.” Now, however, it seems that there is a very real reason to disbelieve that description, thanks to the actions of Trump’s first disgraced National Security Adviser, General Michael Flynn.
General Flynn has previously asked for immunity in exchange for his testimony in front of Congress, saying he has, quote, “a story to tell.” But Congress did not grant Flynn immunity. Instead, they issued subpoenas for him to turn over documents relating to the probe to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Flynn’s response is pretty stunning for someone in the thick of this ever-growing scandal: He has chosen to defy the legal requests from the Senate and invoke his Fifth Amendment rights against incriminating himself in potentially criminal activity.
Now, people who have nothing to hide and have done nothing wrong have absolutely no reason to invoke the Fifth Amendment. That means that something criminal took place, and Michael Flynn was somehow involved. TECHNICALLY, it’s not an admission of guilt, but he wouldn’t need immunity to tell his story if there was no wrongdoing.
Everyone on Team Trump should be very, very afraid at this point. They’ve been working in that White House for nearly 130 days, and the entire time there has been scandal after scandal, lie after lie, and it all points to a very likely cover-up when it comes to Russiagate.
My advice, those of you who somehow made the grave mistake of allowing yourselves to be ensnared in Trump’s web of lies and criminality? Lawyer up, and then resign, STAT, before you get even deeper into this Trumpster fire. When the shit really hits the fan, you’ll be glad you weren’t around to get hit by it.
