Donald Trump has always led a life of lawsuits, bankruptcies, and scandals. He’s played fast and loose with the law for as long as he’s been in public life. However, when he decided to run for president, his team picked uber bigoted Christian zealot – someone they viewed as a boy scout – Indiana Governor Mike Pence, to be Trump’s running mate. Presumably, this would make traditional conservatives less nervous about Trump. It worked; after all, the dream team of bigots everywhere got elected.
Well, it seems that Pence is feeling that he may be in over his head. Now that it has been confirmed that Trump is personally under investigation for potential obstruction of justice (and possibly other crimes) in the Russia collusion investigation, it seems that Pence suddenly felt the need to lawyer up. Pence has decided that all Russia-related inquiries will be handled by Richmond, Virginia lawyer Richard Cullen. He seems like a good choice, as he was once a U.S. Attorney and currently practices at a prestigious private firm. Pence mouthpiece Jarrod Agen says of the move:
“I can confirm that the Vice President has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel. The Vice President is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the President’s agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter.”
Now, this could be something Pence has done out of an abundance of caution, but that seems highly unlikely. After all, innocent bystanders don’t usually go scurrying off to hire lawyers. It is much more likely that if there is some kind of cover-up going on here, Pence is definitely aware of it, and may even be involved.
It seems that Pence is a lot more shrewd than Trump, though, and according to the Washington Post, the selection of this lawyer for Pence took weeks, and there were bunches of qualified lawyers to parade in and out of Pence’s office for interviews prior to he and his team ultimately deciding on Cullen. Perhaps Trump will learn the value of paying his bills after this; after all, he has no such ability to have his pick of lawyers, as many top firms turned down the opportunity to represent the scandal-ridden Trump.
This White House and everyone in it is going down. Just wait. People don’t lawyer up like this when there’s nothing to see and nothing to worry about. Pence is as guilty as Trump, most likely, and we should all just pop our popcorn and wait for the shoes to keep dropping. When the last one does, we can finally say good riddance to them all.
