Donald Trump has been absolutely nuts when it comes to his negative media coverage lately, and has been going after NBC News in particular ever since the network published a story about his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, calling him a “moron.”
Earlier today, Trump’s attacks on NBC crossed the line as he made a threat that clearly overstepped free speech. Trump tweeted:
“With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”
Let’s just say most people didn’t like that, and Trump got hammered promptly for his ridiculous, empty threat. The greatest response has come from the National Association of Broadcasters, who nailed Trump for threatening NBC’s broadcasting license and the First Amendment. National Association of Broadcasters CEO Gordon Smith released a statement:
“The founders of our nation set as a cornerstone of our democracy the First Amendment, forever enshrining and protecting freedom of the press. It is contrary to this fundamental right for any government official to threaten the revocation of an FCC license simply because of a disagreement with the reporting of a journalist.”
Not that Trump particularly cares too much for the US Constitution, but it’s clearly a violation of the First Amendment for Trump to threaten the media for publishing unflattering – but true – information about him. We couldn’t have said it better than Smith.
Someone needs to remind Trump that he is the President – not a dictator. If he wants unchecked power and to dictate everything the press reports and the American people consume, he is in the wrong country. One would think that if Trump wants more good news printed about him, he might actually start doing his job or at least acting like a grown up. But by now, we all know that’s far too much to ask from Trump.
